An account by David Auerbach, probably the engineer who first made it possible to share emojis in the USA (- ◡-)|.

Tèque X-tra n°1 — Crypto Forever

Since November 2023, with my fellow Guillaume Heuguet, we are editing paper-based zines in French, they are published by Editions Audimat (Paris, FR).

♦  Crypto Forever by Sally Olds, translated in French by Loup Cellard and Guillaume Heuguet, design by Pierre Vanni.

Abstract : The scandals surrounding the major cryptocurrency entrepreneurs are numerous, the most spectacular of which is undoubtedly the conviction for fraud and money laundering of Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder of the FTX sales platform — which has not prevented bitcoin from regaining its highest value for a year. This first-person account by Australian author Sally Olds tells the anonymous story of these small-time investors who cling to crypto to survive precariousness or find an ideology in which to invest. Far from the image of the « tech bro » — a white, straight man, a geek in his early thirties — Sally Olds tells us how crypto has also vampirized her queer and arty friends, adepts of polyamory and one-night stands. Olds helps us understand how the success of cryptocurrencies, far from being limited to a monolithic ideology, has fed a diversity of contradictory needs and desires.

Sally Olds is a writer from Queensland living in Naarm/Melbourne. Her work has been published by Sydney Review of Books, un Magazine, AQNB, the Institute of Modern Art, collected in anthologies, and shortlisted for the Griffith Review’s Emerging Voices Competition and the Sydney Review of Books/Copyright Agency’s Emerging Critics Fellowship. She has collaborated extensively with Precog, a club night held in Naarm, and taught writing workshops in and outside of university. This is her first book.

Crypto Forever is the translation of the eponymous chapter from the book People who Lunch: Essays on Work, Leisure, and Loose Living published by Upswell Publishing in 2022.
